Movie review: Dil Bechara

The irony in Sushant Singh Rajput’s film career is that his first movie Kai poi che and his last movie Dil Bechara had both his characters have a grief strickening ending. If it was any other day I would not have jumped to watch Dil Bechara (knowing very well it could be a depressing story) but after Sushant’s untimely death I felt the need and compulsion to watch the movie even more.

I am still not come to terms that such a talented actor had to end his life this way. After watching Kai Po Che much much later after its release I went on searching for his other movies and watched them just for him. There was some energy and excitement within him. I loved M.S.Dhoni movie. No other actor could have nailed Dhoni’s body language like him. His death sure has created some stir in the bollywood industry but he could have created the same sensation by living and fighting through it too. I surely miss him!!

This film is a desi remake of Fault in our stars. Considering I did not watch the original (nor have read the book) I am not tempted to compare it with any of its previous versions.

The movie’s story is almost very clear from its trailer. Two people who are very sick, learn to embrace life and eventually death along a beautiful journey of love. Do not watch it if you are not in the mood for sad endings.

The film is packed with some solid good performances from its lead characters. Sushant exceptionally stands out with his enthusiasim and chirpiness. He is lively and brings humour in every scene in the first half. Sanjana Sanghi as Kizie shows her transformation from a sick to a spirited youngster very well. I personally liked the Bengali parents of Kizie. This was one of the rare movies that had less of the mother crying and more of the father’s emotions portrayed well. Watch out for some amazing tracks from AR Rahman.

The first half was truly enjoyable. Manny brings in the much required life to the movie. But the second half gets depressing when the same Manny is in pain.

I did not understand how Manny falls for Kizie. I wish there could have been some love at first sight scenes. Or atleast some conversation between Manny and Kizie why they both liked each other. Did the love happen just because that they both shared the same pain??

Though you know how the movie will end , Dil Bechara can actually make you sit through the entire 1 hour and 41 minutes run time. Watch it just for Sushant. You will love it!!!!
